During the summer of 2003, The
Stories of Service Youth Group comprised of nine young men and women
proved their interest, compassion, and willingness to be involved by
working with an adult mentor and veteran from the VA Medical Center in
Battle Creek, to capture his military history.
They worked untiringly to listen to the veteran’s history, look
at his photos, write a script for his story, and finally produce a quality
five-minute digital movie by their deadline of August 1, 2003.
This group was successful
because every person not only showed respect for one another, but
especially respected his/her particular veteran and the price he had paid
for our freedom. By bonding
with this veteran, they were able to learn history they would never have
read in a textbook, and the word “veteran” now has a new meaning
for
them.
For this year’s Stories
of Service Project they have accepted the challenge of mentoring another
youth to lead by example. They
are, however, so dedicated and committed to their current veteran that
they are also working on second project with him in 2004.
Andy Layton, David
Kachman, Deena Marshall, Deb Koster, Amber Lawrence, Nathan Bassila, Leo
Pretto, Kacey Lewis, and Lindsay Fischer are remarkable examples of the
commitment and promise of our youth today.
These students are willing to make commitments even when it
involves personal sacrifice and they definitely have
shown the four stars
for character.
Individuals who participated in the
Stories of Service Project are Cindy
Cable, Nathan Bassila, Scott Durham, Lindsay Fischer, Wendy Johnson, David
Kachman, Deb Koster, Amber Lawrence, Andrew Layton, Kacey Lewis, Deena
Marshall, Leo Pretto, Lino & Kaye Pretto, Glenda Scarbrough, Sveri
Stromsta-May, Delbert Turner, David Walton , and Bill Williams. |
